After a major disaster, such as an earthquake, the emergency responders will be overwhelmed. They may not be available to help us. Community members will need to be able to take care of themselves for several days and possibly as long as several weeks. It is critical that people know how to safely handle situations in a disaster. This class is focused on finding and rescuing people after a disaster. This class is based on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) light search and rescue training module. Participants will learn about search and rescue planning, how to assess the situation, search techniques, rescue techniques, and most important, rescuer safety.
We strongly encourage you to take this class with neighbors, friends, and coworkers. We will also be offering disaster medical and neighborhood radio communications. Work with your neighbors and colleagues to have several people take each class so that you have the basic skills necessary in your community to respond in a disaster.
