Neighborhood Radio Emergency Communications Class

  • Richmond Public Library, Community Room (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Register. After a disaster, cell phones may not be working. Learn about neighborhood emergency radio communications so you can get the help you need and support others. You will learn:
- types of radios (FRS, GMRS, & Ham)
- basic radio communication skills
- what might be the best type of radio to have for your situation
- how to connect with others in a disaster
- how you can practice now so when a disaster strikes, you'll have the skills you need

During a major earthquake, phones are not going to work or lines will be overwhelmed. 911 will be unable to handle the volume of calls. Firefighters and first responders are required to do a windshield assessment of the damage before starting to respond. We as a community can help our first responders and ourselves by working together as a neighborhood team to report the location of victims and hazards. This will allow them to start responding faster, which can save lives and property.

North & East Neighborhood Emergency Communications Drill

Come join your neighbors in the North & East for our emergency communications drill. We will be focused on a scenario where there is a wildfire and communicate with the incident command post (ICP) hazards that we see using handheld radios. If you have a handheld radio (FRS, GMRS, or ham), please bring it. Make sure the batteries are charged and you have a label on your radio.

Don't have a radio?
- We also need several people to be scribes.
- You can be a team member who goes out and helps with damage assessment.
- We will have a few radios on hand, but you need to have attended our radio class or had some radio training. Sign up for our upcoming class, https://radioaug13.eventbrite.com.

NOTE: This is part of a larger countywide drill. You do not need to live in the North & East to participate in our part of the drill.

Disaster Preparedness: Search and Rescue

  • Nevin Community Center - Multipurpose Room (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Registration required.

After a major disaster, such as an earthquake, the emergency responders will be overwhelmed. They may not be available to help us. Community members will need to be able to take care of themselves for several days and possibly as long as several weeks. It is critical that people know how to safely handle situations in a disaster. This class is focused on finding and rescuing people after a disaster. This class is based on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) light search and rescue training module. Participants will learn about search and rescue planning, how to assess the situation, search techniques, rescue techniques, and most important, rescuer safety.

We strongly encourage you to take this class with neighbors, friends, and coworkers. We will also be offering disaster medical and neighborhood radio communications. Work with your neighbors and colleagues to have several people take each class so that you have the basic skills necessary in your community to respond in a disaster.

Organize your Neighborhood for Emergency Preparedness

  • Richmond Public Library, Community Room (map)

Disasters happen. Yet most of us don't have a plan. In this short workshop, you'll create the basis for putting a neighborhood emergency plan together. Registration is required. You'll learn how to create a basic map of utilities and to organize your community for a rapid response after a disaster. The first few hours immediately following a disaster are the golden hours where we can save the most lives and minimize damage to property. Having a plan in place could save the life of a loved one or neighbor. A short investment in your time could be invaluable. Please consider taking this course with a neighbor in order to implement the program. Register so we prepare a set of handouts for your neighborhood.
